Walk in Love

April 19 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

A Commemorative March will be held on April 19, 2017 at 6:30 pm
walking from St. Anselm’s Church to the Courthouse, on the Public Square.
All are welcome to join with the Anti Racism Task Force, St. Augustine’s, St. Anselm’s
and a number of interfaith friends as we commemorate the silent march that took place
on April 19th, 1960 after the bombing of Civil Rights Lawyer Z Alexander Looby’s home,
next door to (what is now) St. Anselm’s.
This event led to a meeting of Diane Nash and Mayor Ben West on that day
at the courthouse which then led to the integration of Nashville businesses.
Mr. Looby was a member of Holy Trinity and gave the land to the diocese
to build the chapel of St. Anselm’s for the students of the historic black colleges and universities.
We’ll march 2 miles to the courthouse (Public Square) along Jefferson Street and the Bicentennial mall.
Feel free to join us for either part of the event or drive yourself. We realize not everyone is able to
easily walk the two miles.
Kwame Lillard, who was present for the original walk
will orient us at the beginning.
(https://ridefreedom. wordpress.com/2010/08/08/ kwame-lillard/)
We’ll start in St. Anselm’s front yard with Kwame’s reviewing of
what happened that day and short remarks and/or prayers by representatives of the different groups,
commence the walk and end with prayers at the courthouse.
We are encouraging folks to plan to leave a vehicle at the Public Square garage and carpool back or use Uber.
Why come?
  • To experience the civil rights history of Nashville,
  • to honor those who took risks to move our city toward greater respect of the dignity of all persons,
  • and to pray with other people of faith for the grace to live together in justice and peace.
